CSR ACTIVITY: Energy Private Developers’ Association and BK Foundation Illuminate Lives with Solar Lighting and Improved Cookstoves in Nyanza and Ruhango Districts.

On December 13, 2024, the Energy Private Developers (EPD), in collaboration with the BK Foundation, made a significant contribution to Rwanda’s sustainable development goals by providing solar lighting solutions and improved cooking stoves (ICS) to 141 households in Nyanza and Ruhango Districts. This initiative aims to address clean energy access and reduce reliance on biomass for cooking.

The project directly supports Rwanda’s ambitious goal to cut biomass dependence from 83% to 42% by 2024, while enhancing safety, improving health, and conserving the environment. With many rural households lacking access to electricity and modern cooking solutions, this program brings renewed hope for a greener and more equitable future.

A Vision for Universal Energy Access

During the launch event, Serge Wilson MUHIZI, CEO of EPD, emphasized the importance of this activity in fulfilling the broader vision of Rwanda Energy Week.

“This initiative is part of giving back to the community. One of our goals was to light more than 100 houses as a tangible outcome of our conference,” said MUHIZI. He also highlighted EPD’s commitment to implementing social responsibility activities through partnerships, praising BK Foundation for their shared mission of advancing universal energy access.

MUHIZI noted that while 141 households have benefited from the initiative, efforts are ongoing to extend support to other communities in need of solar lighting and improved cookstoves.

A Partner in Conservation and Development

Ingrid KARANGWAYIRE, Executive Secretary at BK Foundation, shared insights into their environmental conservation project, which aims to reach underserved areas in collaboration with the government.

“In two months, we have supported 141 households. Our goal is to increase this number in next year’s budget to reach even more families,” she said.

She underscored the project’s objectives of providing light for homes, supporting children’s education, and protecting the environment through sustainable energy solutions.

Collaboration for National Progress

Marion NIRERE, Energy Coordinator at the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), highlighted the importance of energy infrastructure in driving Rwanda’s development.

“We ended NST1 with 77% of households having electricity, falling short of the 100% target. By 2029, we aim for universal access, which requires collaboration with the private sector and other partners,” she stated, encouraging continued cooperation to achieve these ambitious goals.

Regional Development Gains

Patrick KAJYAMBERE, Vice Mayor of Nyanza District in charge of Economic Development, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative. “Electricity access in Nyanza has increased to 77%, with this grant adding 2% to the region’s energy rates,” he said, urging recipients to maintain the resources provided and ensure future support benefits unreached households.

Transforming Lives in Rural Communities

The impact of the initiative was evident in the testimonies of beneficiaries. Felicien NKUNDAKOZERA, a resident of Ruhango District, expressed heartfelt gratitude.

“I used to run kilometers to charge my phone. Now, I can do it at home while using an improved cooking stove that reduces wood usage. Previously, wood that lasted only three days now lasts two weeks,” he said.

Anne Marie TWAGIRIMANA, from Muyira Sector in Nyanza District, shared similar sentiments.

“Solar lighting has improved our children’s ability to study at night, ensured our safety, and eliminated the health hazards from smoke caused by traditional cooking methods,” she noted, emphasizing how the stoves and lighting have addressed key challenges in her community.

The launch of the CSR Activity, providing solar lighting and improved cookstoves to households in Nyanza and Ruhango, marks a significant step toward sustainable energy access and environmental conservation.

Anne Marie Twagirimana, from Muyira Sector, Nyanza, shares her joy with the solar home system that now lights her family’s evenings and supports her children’s studies.

Felicien Nkundakozera overjoyed with his improved cookstove, celebrates the transformation it brings to his daily life, reducing wood usage and enhancing convenience.

Recipients of improved cookstoves in Nyanza and Ruhango come together to celebrate a step toward cleaner cooking, healthier living, and environmental conservation.

A Brighter, Cleaner Future

The CSR Activity marks a significant milestone in Rwanda’s journey toward sustainable energy access and environmental conservation. Through collaborative efforts between EPD, BK Foundation, and the government, this program is not just lighting homes but also empowering families, protecting the environment, and inspiring hope for a brighter, cleaner future for all Rwandans.
